Goldeneye Source: The Inside Scoop

Recently I had the chance to catch up with Sean Stock, managing director for Goldeneye: Source.  Here is what he had to say about his current project.

How is the progress coming along for GE:S?

Currently the team is actively working on new gameplay modes, code, weapons, and art assets for the next release (Beta 4).  Overall, progress to the final release of the mod is probably somewhere around 60-70% finished. For the next release we have two new maps, Caverns and Facility Backzone all ready to go.  New characters and animations, as well as classic features from N64's GoldenEye 007 such as bullet penetration and rolling explosions will also make the cut.  New game modes are also in there such as Live and Let Die and Capture the Key, just to name a few.

How many people are currently working on the project and in what capacity?

We have 32 developers in different fields such as programming, art (which is both 2D and 3D as well as conceptual artist), level and Controlenvironmental design, and finally sound design. In addition, we have ten quality assurance testers who regularly test the current build of the game, as well as a public relations department. Many of our developers are very active, spending dozens of hours a week on this free project, while juggling personal schedules and tasks at the same time.

When can we expect an update to the game, and do you have a date in mind when you would like to have a final release ready?

Right now the development team is trying to get the Beta 4 release ready to go as soon as possible, with as many new features and content as we can fit in. As for a final release, at this time it's difficult to try to predict it, depending on what we come up with to implement in the future. Plus we like to build up the hype.

" If it was in Goldeneye 007, it will be in Goldeneye: Source "

Currently GE:S is multiplayer only, is a single-player campaign planned for the final release?

The development team is currently focusing on nailing down the classic multiplayer experience from GoldenEye 007. When the multiplayer component is finished, there is a high probability that we will attempt to tackle recreating the singleplayer campaign.

What other features not yet announced do you have planned for the final release?

That's a difficult question to answer; most of the things we choose to implement either come directly from GoldenEye 007, or someone on the development team spontaneously comes up with an idea, discusses it, ge1and then possibly has it implemented, tested, and included in the final release. If it was in GoldenEye 007, it will be in GoldenEye: Source with a little extra included.

The mission statement contained on your website claims "...we are not here to recreate the game exactly how it was in GE007..." and "...we are here to take the game even further..."  How do you plan on taking the game further than it's N64 counterpart?

The goal of the GoldenEye: Source development team is to recreate the greatness of GoldenEye 007, using the modern technology of the Source engine and its fantastic graphical and online capabilities. The ability to play online with other hardcore GoldenEye fans with modern graphics and sound effects enhances the experience to become something that many fans never thought possible.

Do you believe it's possible to please hardcore fans looking for the same N64 experience and also newcomers to the title looking for the latest trends in gaming?

Striking the correct balance between the different types of players is one of the most difficult parts of developing this mod.  Aspects of the mod such as different character heights and certain weapon strengths (RCP-90 comes to mind), had to be removed in order to suit the online gaming world and satisfy newcomers to the mod. On the other hand, the development team makes sure to keep a good part of the original look and features of the original GoldenEye 007 within the mod to please the hardcore fans.  Gamer's from the N64 era will appreciate our newly implemented rolling explosions and bullet penetration, as well as our attempt at an extremely close recreation of the entire game soundtrack, level design and characters.

Multiplayer gameplay from the current 3.1 Beta version

GE:S is one of, if not the most anticipated HL2 mod's of all time.  Will the finished game live up to it's hype?

We sure hope so.  Everything that goes into the mod is well thought-out and tested before it is allowed into a release, to ensure high quality in both appearance in gameplay.

Thanks for doing this, is there anything fans of the project can do to aid your progress?

No problem.  All that we ask of our fans is to keep playing, and tell your friends about the mod! The more players and popularity the mod has, gives us the motivation to continue to develop and get things out faster for everyone to enjoy.

I wonder if they cant balance the RCP90 with the AR33, cause as I recall it was a decent way to keep someone at a distance who was spraying

3:!7, he karate chopped a man :D. The Multiplayer seems to be coming along quite nicely. Many servers up and players. However, my excitement lies in the idea that a single player campaign will be created. Great job so far!!!!

I hope they work on their character models more, 'cause I'm not too happy 'bout Bond's facial features, and such other things. I also think it would be pretty cool to make the game more like the movie 'stead of the original "GoldenEye 007" for N64, 'cause in some cases, the original blew off the movie, even 2 years after the film's release!

I like what the developers are doing with this matter, and all I can say is keep up the good work, and please don't fuck up the campaign, that's all I've got to live for.
Another thing is, I would like for the final release to be playable on all platforms, not just PC, and most-deffinatel y on the Wii, 'cause I'm a major fan of "Xbox 360" and "PS3"
